An impressive sailing trip
into the Pack-ice. The ice is
tough sea-ice deriving from
countless winters in the Polar
Ocean and often 10 metres or
more thick. The ice from the
Polar Ocean flows mainly
outwards between Spitsbergen
and East Greenland. Amongst
the Pack-ice are enormous
icebergs, pieces of inland ice
often criss-crossed by blue
and green stripes where melt
water from the glaciers has
run into crevasses in the many
thousand year-old ice. A
"must" for photographers! |
Sailing southwards we arrive
at the entrance of the vast,
often ice-filled Sermilik
fjord (3 glaciers disgorge
bergs into the head of this
fjord) and a typical Greenland
village. Remains of earlier
simple stone and turf houses
stand beside the colourful
small wooden dwelling, and a
tiny, charming church, which
is also the schoolhouse. One
arrives here in the summer by
boat, and in winter, overland
by dogsled! The sailing route
may give the bonus of a whale
sighting.
|
This sightseeing flight
takes us up over Ammassalik
Island with views across
mountains, glaciers and
fjords and lands us at over
1000 metres altitude on
Mitivagkat Glaciers, an
original part and the
ancient Greenland Ice Cap. A
stunning view all around,
with the Sermilik fjord
below us and the mainland
opposite. The purity of the
arctic air greatly increases
visibility such that we can
see in excess of 200
kilometres along the coast,
a 25 minute stop to take
photos and enjoy the
silence, before the return
flight. |

Sail past a fascinating
variety of icebergs and flows
to the Apusiaajik Glacier. If
the pack ice is well spread,
you might even spot a whale!
After passing by the
mountainous headland of Qerqe,
enter a tranquil bay named
after the "dear little
glacier", Apusiaajik. If
conditions allow it, you can
board a smaller boat to sail
to the glacier where you can
set foot on the glacier itself
and explore it. The
opportunity to cruise close to
a glacier is an unforgettable
"must" for photographers! |
This ramble takes visitors out
of Ammassalik "town" into a
luxuriant valley where one
sees the arctic summer flora
and landscape. We follow a
rough track (in the early
summer with snow pockets) but
the terrain is not difficult.
At a leisurely pace, we have
time to examine the tiny but
beautiful flowers of which
there are a surprising
variety.
|
An easy and relaxing trip,
we cross the Ammassalik
fjord, mount the low hills
on the North-East side and
descend into Sarpagajik
fjord. Stop at a point close
to the meeting of fjord and
coastal pack ice, called
Sarpaq. Here currents in the
shallow water make an
icefree pool where edible
seaweed can be gathered, and
we can try this local
delicacy if the tide is low.
A hot drink and sightseeing
of the packice before
returning to Tasiilaq, with
an impressive view of the
town in its mountainous
setting as we descend toward
its fjord from the opposing
side. |

|
A full days dogsledging and
visit to an outlying
settlement West of Tasiilaq.
Traversing the fjord beside
Tasiilaq to its end, the route
follows into a hinterland of
hills and lakes and rises to a
mountain pass at 2000 feet
where the majestic Sermilik
fjord comes into view.
Descending toward the western
coast of Ammassalik island,
including an impressive frozen
waterfall, we arrive on the
seaice amid immobilized
icebergs and arrive at the
picturesque island village of
Ikkatseq, population 2
families. Lunch in this
typical traditional
settlement, where life is
based on fishing and hunting
seals and polar bears,
completely without modern
conveniences. Sledging home to
Tasiilaq, gasp at the dogs
clawing their way up the
frozen waterfall, and the fast
final downhill run toward the
Ammassalik. |
This is a favoured journey of
all locals, crossing the
length of Ammassalik island
from South to North and
arriving at the village of
Tiniteqilaaq on the Sermilik
fjord.The highlight of the
trip enroute is the crossing
of the Asingaleq glacier at an
altitude between 2-3000 feet,
and the magnificent views from
this. The village is said by
many to be the most
picturesque of all, and here
the use of kayaks for narwhale
hunting still exists . Across
the fjord lies the great
Greenland Icecap.Overnight in
village. A longer but
impressive trip! |
